They are sustainably and ethically handcrafted in South Africa with the blessing of the Basotho Nation. They are naturally hypoallergenic, and each has its unique history and story.
Dating back to the 1930s, the SeanaMarena is traditionally worn by the king and his chiefs, and it has the highest status of all Basotho blankets. SeanaMarena means “To swear by the Chiefs” in the Sotho language. Fun-Fact the Basotho (SeanaMarena) blankets were featured In the Marvels Black Panther worn by the chiefs.
Across the kingdom, a variety of these blankets are worn by the people of Lesotho to represent the different rites of passage in society. The Kharetsa is named after the spiral aloe, which is only found in the Maluti Mountains of Lesotho. It is surrounded by the iconic Basotho hat and shield.
As a small business, we wanted to make the most significant impact we could. Over 5 million people are without clean drinking water in South Africa and Lesotho. All too often, children are given the family task of walking for miles every day to collect water.
All our blankets are sustainably and ethicallycrafted in South Africa with consent from the Basotho Nation. Our factory is in its 66th year and is 4th generation family-owned and operated.
