It used to be that our homes were a place where we slept, ate on occasion, and rushed from one activity to the next. We gave each other a quick hug or wave as we left for work and school. We stopped by on our lunch break to walk the dog or grab a change of clothes, but mostly homes weren’t what they are now - which is the place where we do nearly everything; work, workout, school, sleep, eat, relax… you name it, we do it.

Homes have evolved so much in the last year. Nowadays home is more than a place to sleep, people want their homes to be comfortable and functional. In my own small house, we had to get creative with our use of space once we realized there would be 3 kids doing virtual school and two parents working from home. We turned a shed into an office to accommodate my husband's desk and give him a private space to make work calls. Fortunately, there was enough space in his home office for us to fit a small couch and blanket to make it feel a little more cozy. There’s nothing better than getting a cup of coffee in the morning, wrapping yourself up in a blanket, and commuting 5 seconds away to your home office.
We converted another small dining nook into the kids school area. And our couch? Well it’s seen more use this past year than ever before. Weekend dates to the movie theatre have been replaced with snuggling up on the couch and watching Disney+ or the newest Netflix series. We have baskets filled to the brim with blankets, so we can all stay warm and cozy while enjoying the latest flick.
With everyone spending more time at home, there is a renewed emphasis on buying quality items that will stand the test of time. People aren’t just buying for aesthetics, they are buying for comfort and longevity. What’s the saying? ‘Buy cheap, buy twice’.
Here are our must-have blankets to make your home a place that’ll make you want to stay awhile. One of my favorite sayings is “create a life that you don’t need to take a vacation from.” I think if there’s one thing we’ve learned from Covid, it is how to fully enjoy our simple unscheduled days at home.
This is no contest. The Mali Mud Cloth Blanket is huge, soft and everyone’s favorite blanket. I gifted them to all my friends this year, because everyone who sees it wants it. Perfect couch blanket or bed blanket or home movie theatre blanket. Perfect blanket!
We think the Xhosa striped throw is professional enough to grace the background of your zoom video chats. And when the call is over you can wrap yourself in it and enjoy the fact that you get to be cozy at home while you tackle your 9-5.
